感0 – KANZERO Artist Talk: Digital Graphic Art in Asia
April was indeed an eventful month, with many artistic programmes coming together such as the engaging A TAKEMITSU SEASON: the Spring Soiree, and the opening of our new digital art exhibition 感0 – KANZERO. Many people came for the latter's accompanying artist talk, and it was wonderful to see the great amount of interest in contemporary Japanese pop culture too. Just like last year, we are co-organising an exhibition with NAFA, and this year's focus is on Japanese Prints of the 1970s. Be sure to drop by these two exhibitions while you can!
Besides that, Sakura Matsuri came to a successful close over the first April weekend. JCC was proud to have participated in this memorable event, and we look forward to coming back to Gardens By The Bay next year as well! Till then, do stay tuned for our other interesting and upcoming events!

Kagoshima Homestay Report By Mr Tay Woo Chiao
Perhaps as I was born and bred in a city state, the notion of a homestay programme was not enticing to me. I was no longer a middle- or high-school student so the idea of staying under someone else’s roof, inconveniencing a local family was fairly unsettling for me. Furthermore, in contrast to many Singaporeans, I was not particularly fond of traveling. All factors considered, I thought I would come to dislike this entire Kagoshima experience...(Click here to read more)

People dressed up as the three gods of good fortune and paraded to musical accompaniment. The "gods" were followed...(Click here to read more)

Researchers uncover origin of virus-fighting plasma B cells
Plasma B cells, which move through the body releasing antibodies, are an important component of the body’s fight against viral infections and other invaders. They are relatively rare, however, and increasing their ranks is a major goal of vaccination. However, scientists do not yet fully understand how precursor cells are selected either to enter the body’s fluids as plasma cells or remain in the places, known as germinal centers, where they undergo reprogramming to become more specific attackers of an infection...(Click to read more)

Human immunodeficiency virus -- HIV -- is believed to have evolved from a simian immunodeficiency virus, or SIV, that originated in chimpanzees. How SIV made the species jump has remained a mystery, since human bodies possess a defense mechanism that should prevent such infections. Tetherin, a crucial protein for this protection, acts as a sticky pad on the surface of infected cells, preventing them from releasing nascent virus particles...(Click here to read more: English | Japanese) |
