A TAKEMITSU SEASON: the Spring Soiree

Cultural Medallion Recipient and Co-Founder of Arts Fission, Ms Angela Liong during the introduction.
Nearly 100 guests were at JCC (Japan Creative Centre) for “A TAKEMITSU SEASON: the Spring Soiree - A music & talk event on composer Toru Takemitsu” on Saturday, 14 April 2018. Artists from Arts Fission and The Philharmonic Orchestra, Singapore led guests in an intimate and immersive experience, which was part of an outreach activity in the lead-up to the event “garden•uprooted”.

Cultural Medallion Recipient and Co-Founder of Arts Fission, Ms Angela Liong, first introduced to the audience members the Japanese composer Toru Takemitsu, whose music formed the centre piece of the performance. She explained that pieces of his music would be hidden around the performance space, and audience members were encouraged to find these pieces and hand them to musicians Dr Joyce Beetuan Koh and Mr Shane Thio, who would rearrange and perform the pieces.

JCC was separated into two main performances areas -- the Day Garden and the Night Garden, and audience members were able to move around these spaces freely to watch the dancers perform at different stations in these spaces. Dancers also performed outside the space, at JCC’s doorstep, and next to our bamboo grove outside. JCC’s Director Ms Akiko Sugita was also part of the performance; dressed in a beautiful kimono, she read out haiku that were brought to her by the dancers.

Audience members were riveted and spellbound by the curious rearrangement of Toru Takemitsu’s music, and the dancers’ strong, yet fluid contemporary dance moves, and enjoyed interacting with the space and the performance. “garden•uprooted” will be performed at the Esplanade - Theatres on the Bay on 19 May 2018.
