Overview

It was indeed a busy month at JCC in July, with numerous programmes delighting all five senses - from the popular annual events like Yukata Workshop and Japanese Speech Contest, to the exclusive events like Peranakan Japanese Cuisine Night. We have many more upcoming events, so please do stay updated with our announcements!

Our current exhibition, Connecting the World: Manga Design Exhibition, is being held in conjunction with Singapore's chairmanship of ASEAN and in celebration of the 45th anniversary of Japan-ASEAN Friendship and Cooperation this year. So do visit JCC to get a glimpse of the exclusive manga design illustrating the people, culture and skyline of each of the 10 ASEAN countries, as well as the close ties and friendship between Japan and ASEAN!

Despite the mellow heat, JCC was raring to go this past July, with various events ranging from yukata workshops to promotional events about Rikuzentakata City and the Setouchi region in Japan. JCC also branched out to Temasek Polytechnic, where we held a manga workshop as part of their Global Community Day celebrations and screened two films by movie director Makoto Shinkai. JCC Cinema @ Temasek Polytechnic: The Voices of a Distant Star and The Garden of Words

From 4 to 5 July, and from 11 to 13 July 2018, JCC screened two of Japanese director Makoto Shinkai’s films at Temasek Polytechnic as part of our JCC Cinema series in schools. Bon Holidays

The Bon Festival is held to pray for the repose of the souls of one's ancestors. It's one of the biggest traditional events during the year, along with New Year's. It's sometimes called o-bon or urabon. In the past, it was held in the middle of the seventh month on Japan's traditional calendar. Some regions therefore celebrate it in mid-July, although the old date is closer to mid-August. Since 2014, the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) has been carrying out the Top Global University Project to provide prioritized support to those universities that are leading the internationalization of Japan’s education by launching new programs to encourage and deepen interactions and partnerships with the world’s top universities, reforming personnel and educational systems, enhancing educational systems to help students develop the ability to act globally and accelerating other globalization initiatives. Under the Top Global University Project, 13 universities were selected as Type A (Top Type) universities that are conducting world-leading education and research and 24 universities were selected as Type B (Global Traction Type) universities that are leading the globalization of Japanese society.
