A pre-departure orientation for selected Singaporean participants at the upcoming Japan Exchange and Teaching (JET) Programme was conducted on Thursday, 12nd July 2018 at JCC (Japan Creative Centre). Ms Chihiro Ono, Third Secretary of Embassy of Japan in Singapore, commenced the orientation by briefing them on general information about the programme, as well as details on their departure and stay in Japan. After which, three former JET participants, Ms Cheryl Phua, Ms Sky Chan and Ms Claire Lu shared their experiences staying and working in Japan under the programme, and answered some of the questions from the participants. Following which, the participants mingled and know one another before they are to be dispatched to different prefectures and cities in Japan. Some representatives from J.CLAIR Singapore also attended the orientation.

After the pre-departure orientation, a farewell reception for the 2018 JET Programme participants from Singapore was held at the Japanese Association, Singapore (JAS). His Excellency Ambassador Kenji Shinoda hosted the reception and delivered a short speech to all of the guests.

A total of 33 participants from Singapore will be taking part in this year’s JET Programme. Together with them, members of the JET Alumni Association (JETAA), executives from JAS, and the Japanese Cultural Society (JCS), principals and teaching staffs of the Japanese schools in Singapore, as well as the staffs of the Japan Council of Local Authorities for International Relations (J. CLAIR Singapore) graced the occasion to give their best wishes for the participants.

The JET Programme started in 1987 to promote grassroots exchanges between Japan and other countries in the world. It aims to enhance foreign language education and promote international exchange at the local level, through the fostering of ties between Japanese youth and foreign youth alike. The number of the JET Programme participants has reached over 66,000 from around the globe. Since the first JET participant from Singapore joined this programme in 1999, Singaporean participants have been warmly welcomed as they fulfill their duties in Japan. We hope that all of them will have a wonderful JET experience in Japan!
