Konnichiwa!
Despite the mellow heat, JCC was raring to go this past July, with various events ranging from yukata workshops to promotional events about Rikuzentakata City and the Setouchi region in Japan. JCC also branched out to Temasek Polytechnic, where we held a manga workshop as part of their Global Community Day celebrations and screened two films by movie director Makoto Shinkai.
We also ventured out to Nanyang Polytechnic to present a manga design lecture by Mr Toshihiko Kira, CEO of Manga Designers Lab (MDL) from Japan as part of the exhibition held at JCC from 21 July to 11 August. This exciting and innovative exhibition titled "Connecting the World: Manga Design Exhibition in Singapore!" features 53 artworks combining digital graphics and manga of MDL. The highlight of the exhibition is the 10 ASEAN country banners which respectively depict the people, culture, skyline and connectivity of each of the 10 ASEAN countries. Our aim is to present this exhibition as a wonderful precursor to the 51st ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Meeting happening this August.
JCC put together 'Peranakan Japanese Cuisine Night' to commemorate the 45th Anniversary of official ASEAN-Japan relations and Singapore's Chairmanship of ASEAN at Sheraton Towers Hotel on 13 July. It featured acclaimed chefs Ms Shermay Lee and Mr Tetsuya Yamazaki demonstrating traditional and home-grown recipes from Peranakan and Japanese cuisine respectively. We were honoured to have Mr Heng Swee Keat, Minister for Finance and Ms Chang Hwee Nee, CEO of the National Heritage Board, as the Guests-of-Honour. The event was graced by Ambassadors from ASEAN countries and guests from the Peranakan and Japanese community. It was heartening to see guests celebrate culture together regardless of their country of origin, in the spirit of ASEAN.
July's JCC events were a good way to connect our guests with exciting and innovative aspects of Japan. As summer reaches its peak in Japan, JCC will try to heat up and excite you with various events here in Singapore as well; we will have a piano performance, ceramic art exhibition, and another highly-anticipated Studio Ghibli film as part of JCC Cinema! So do stay updated with us with these upcoming activities in August by becoming a Friend of JCC! You can also keep up with JCC's updates on our website and Facebook page. We look forward to seeing you at our JCC events soon!
