Japanese Balloon Art Exhibition
August was certainly an eventful and meaningful month for JCC! Besides partaking in the celebrations of the Grand Opening of One Tampines Hub with a calligraphy showcase and a special JCC Cinema screening of Your Name. (君の名は。), we also witnessed the conferment of the Grand Cordon of the Order of the Rising Sun on Dr Sydney Brenner. There was also the highly successful Japanese Balloon Art Exhibition, which saw the fruition of efforts of both Japanese and Singapore balloon artists. All of this provided a warm reminder to us on how inspiring and creative collaborations can be.
There was a flurry of memorable lectures and demonstrations at the end of August, and JCC will continue to introduce different aspects and angles of Japanese culture. Our next exhibition will start on 7 September and will showcase works by Singapore-based ceramicists Agnes Lim, Eddie Yee, Hazel Ng, Hiroko Mita, Tan Gek Lin and guest artist, master potter Dr Iskandar Jalil. So do visit JCC to see for yourself their exquisitely crafted masterpieces!

Overview of the Quasi-Zenith Satellite System (QZSS)
QZSS is a Japanese satellite positioning system composed mainly of satellites in quasi-zenith orbits (QZO). However, the term “Quasi-Zenith Satellite (QZS)” can refer to both satellites in QZO and geostationary orbits (GEO). For that reason, the name “QZO satellite” is used when it is necessary to specifically refer to satellites in QZO. Satellite positioning systems use satellite signals to calculate position information. One famous example is the American Global Positioning System (GPS); the QZSS is sometimes called...(Click to read more)

ALOS-2 Captures Massive Iceberg's Breakoff from Antarctica
On July 12, 2017, an iceberg split off from Antarctica’s Larsen C iceberg. With use of ALOS-2’s wide-area observatory mode, JAXA was able to capture the entire calving image. Larsen C, a floating platform of glacial ice on the east side of the Antarctic Peninsula, is among the largest ice shelves ringing Earth’s southernmost continent. The breakage, taking a chunk of its mass away from the Larsen C area, is now a matter of particular interest to glaciologists around the world, as it could also contribute to sea level rise. In the past, partial fractures occurred in the area. However, the last calving event is incomparably massive, possibly causing the glaciers to accelerate that flow into Larsen C and more rifts to grow. JAXA will continue the ALOS-2 operations to monitor the area...(Click to read more)
