Dr Sydney Brenner was conferred with the Grand Cordon of the Order of the Rising Sun by the Emperor of Japan and presented by His Excellency Ambassador Kenji Shinoda on Monday, 21st August 2017. Mr Lim Chuan Poh, Chairman, Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR), graced the ceremony as the Guest-of-Honour. Dr Brenner's daughter and son-in-law, Mrs and Mr Roach, were present to witness this prestigious moment as well.
The Order was presented to Dr Brenner, in recognition of his significant contributions in developing the education and research in the field of science and technology in Japan. During his tenure as the President of Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology Promotion Corporation, he devoted himself to the promotion and installation concept of Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology Graduate University which offers world leading education and research.

Dr Brenner established the C. elegans roundworm (used as a model organism for biomedical research) and attained the Nobel Prize Laureate in Physiology and Medicine in 2002. He was the Former President of Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology Promotion Corporation (OIST PC) from 2005 to 2011, a current Senior Fellow of A*STAR.
As the President of OISTPC, Dr Brenner led his prestigious institution to form an “International Centre for Graduate Research and Education in the Sciences”, the foremost research facility for higher education in the Sciences. Dr Brenner’s insight and vision inspired many, which undoubtedly led to the establishment of the Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology Graduate University.

In addition, a pioneer of Singapore’s Institute of Molecular and Cell Biology (IMCB), he is responsible for the tremendous development of the life sciences in Singapore and has received numerous reputable accolades. Through his vast network and his extensive resume, Dr Brenner has achieved great heights in promoting education through the medium of Science and Technology between Japan and Singapore.
The Government of Japan confers decorations on foreign nationals who have made outstanding contributions towards Japan in the areas of politics, diplomacy, academia, education, medicine, social welfare, economics, culture, sports, Science & Technology and the arts. Other notable Singaporean recipients of the Order include the late Mr Lee Kuan Yew, Emeritus Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong and renowned potter Dr Iskandar Jalil.
