The shakuhachi lecture and demonstration by Mr Kizan Kawamura was held at Japan Creative Centre on 31 August 2017. Mr Kizan, who has received numerous awards and is a teacher at the Tozan School, gave a detailed introduction on the playing techniques as well as the different types of shakuhachi. Ms Sakai Namiko from TENKO, helped with the interpretation. Guests were captivated during Mr Kizan’s demonstration, as he effortlessly performed on the shakuhachi.

Following that, some members of the audience were given a chance to try their hand at playing the instrument, with Mr Kizan providing a plastic shakuhachi for each of them. The audience members were able to put their practice to the test, as they attempted to play a traditional Japanese song ‘Sakura’. Together with Ms Sakai and other members of TENKO, Mr Kizan put up an exciting performance for a grand finale, featuring the shakuhachi, shamisen and the taiko drum.
It was indeed a beautiful night of music, with guests not only learning more about the rich versatility of Japanese musical instruments, but also even creating their own music!
