
Inspired by Rimpa, Genesis is a video series created by Prof Naoko Tosa, a renowned Japanese media artist and Japan Cultural Envoy for 2016 who had a lecture at JCC
We kick-started this year with Looking for Japan – Genesis –, a lecture led by renowned Japanese media artist and Japan Cultural Envoy 2016 Prof Naoko Tosa, and an exhibition that showcased collaborative products of Singapore style and Ishikawa traditional crafts in light of last year's SJ50. A well-received JCC Cinema screening of a Japanese comedy titled Thermae Romae was put up at our centre as well.
Being the start of a new year, we have also welcomed a number of visits at JCC, such as delegation from the Members of the House of Councillors and students from the Japanese School, Singapore. Do continue to check out our events, starting with Japan Media Arts Festival Special Exhibition in Singapore, an annual international event held in collaboration with the Agency for Cultural Affairs, Government of Japan this month!
We would also like thank you once again for celebrating SJ50 with us! We had a total of 218 SJ50 events last year, which was indeed a great and memorable year for both Singapore and Japan. Risshun
Risshun, which falls in early February, is the first day of spring in the traditional Japanese calendar. According to the calendar used in the East since ancient times, risshun marks the beginning of spring, rikka (early May) the beginning of summer, risshu (early August) the beginning of autumn, and ritto (early November) the beginning of winter. Success of Epsilon-2 Launch with ERG Aboard
JAXA successfully launched the second Epsilon Launch Vehicle with Exploration of energization and Radiation in Geospace (ERG) aboard at 8:00 p.m. on December 20, 2016 (JST) from the Uchinoura Space Center. The launch vehicle flew as planned, and at approximately 13 minutes and 27 seconds after liftoff, the separation of ERG was confirmed. Completion of KIKU No. 8 Operation
At 3:25 p.m., (Japan Standard Time) January 10, 2017, JAXA terminated its Engineering Test Satellite-VIII KIKU No.8 (ETS-III) transmission, thus brought a closure to the satellite’s operation.

Successful deployment of six CubeSats delivered by KOUNOTORI6
On January 16, 2017, from 6:10 p.m. - 7:50 p.m. (Japan time), a total of six CubeSats were successfully deployed into orbit from the Japanese Experiment Module ("Kibo") of International Space Station (ISS). One of the CubeSats is AOBA VELOX-III of Nanyang Technological University, Singapore (NTU).
These CubeSats were launched on December 9 aboard of the H-II Transfer Vehicle KOUNOTORI6 and arrived at the ISS on December 14, 2016. (Click to read more)
