Looking for Japan – Genesis –, a lecture by Prof Naoko Tosa,
Japan Cultural Envoy 2016 & Prof Ryohei Nakatsu

Prof Naoko Tosa, an internationally renowned Japanese media artist and Japan Cultural Envoy for 2016, together with Prof Ryohei Nakatsu, a professor and former Director of Interactive & Digital Media Institute (IDMI) at National University of Singapore (NUS), held a lecture entitled Looking for Japan – Genesis – at JCC (Japan Creative Centre) on 7 January 2017.

Deputy Chief of Mission Minister Naohiro Tsutsumi, who is also our Acting Director of JCC, joined the audiences and listen to the lecture as well. The lecture focused on how we should express our art and culture using cutting edge technology at the point of time, how both of them have been working towards such aim through projection mapping, as well as their inspiration from Rinpa (琳派), one of a major historical schools and styles of Japanese painting.

A Q&A session was later conducted, where Prof Tosa and Prof Nakatsu further discussed with the audiences about issues such as overcoming the limitations of projection mapping, the challenges of reserving and promoting culture in an increasingly globalised society, and opportunities arising from the rise of localization.

As part of Prof Tosa’s trip to Singapore, she will be having a solo exhibition at Ikkan Art Gallery (http://ikkan-art.com/genesis/) from 10 January till 18 February 2017. Do not miss the opportunity to experience her artworks!

The media art and video series created by Prof Naoko Tosa entitled Genesis, which is inspired by Rinpa, is now displaying on the screen at our JCC E-library, together with the on-going Japan Media Art Festival Special Exhibition in Singapore. For those who have missed the lecture, do come down and have a glimpse of the artwork!
