The Japan Creative Centre, Embassy of Japan and JETAA Singapore (Japan Exchange and Teaching programme Alumni Association) are delighted to present a yukata workshop once more. Conducted by Singaporean, Nathalie Ng, with her in-depth knowledge acquired from living in Japan, this workshop will focus on yukata trends seen over the recent years in Japan. It will also feature a hands-on session on how to wear a yukata simply and beautifully.

In addition, a short Q&A session will be held at the end. Participants are welcome to bring along their own yukata for the hands-on session if they have them. Due to the limited number of yukatas available for the hands-on session, those interested are encouraged to register early to ensure a place. For those who were unable to make it for last year's workshop, this is an opportunity not to be missed!

About the Workshop

Worn during natsu matsuri (summer festival), the yukata has been known as a symbol of summer, as well as a symbol of youthful exuberance. Having fewer rules in its assembly than the more formal cousin, the kimono, the yukata has been experiencing growing popularity with the youth. Festivals such as the Hamamatsu Yukata Festival were created due to growing interest in yukata. Hence, this workshop aims to cover a short history of the yukata, and highlight trends over the recent years. It also hopes to prove how easy it is to wear the yukata, and to share the yukata and kimono experience with the public.

About the Speaker

Ms Nathalie Ng

Ms Nathalie Ng is an ex-JET participant (Japan Exchange and Teaching programme) who had resided in Shizuoka. She first started wearing yukata at the age of 17. Since then, she has been unable to resist yukatas and kimonos, and adds any attractive finds to her growing collection. Together with her best friend, Lili, they organise yukata or kimono outings around Singapore. Through this workshop, Nathalie aims to share the simplistic beauty of the yukata from a Singaporean's point of view, and to increase awareness of Japanese culture. Nathalie is currently the President of JETAA (Japan Exchange and Teaching Programme Alumni Association), Singapore Chapter.
