In recent years. the yukata has been known to be a symbol of summer, Worn during natsu matsuri (summer festival), it is also for symbol of youthful exuberance. Having less rules in its essembly than the more formal cousin, the kimono. The yukata has been experiencing growing popularity with the youth. Festivals such as the Hamamatsu Yukata Festival has been created due to the growing interest in yukata. Hence this workshop aims to cover a short history of the yukata, showcase trends that have been seen over the recent years, show people how easy it is to wear the yukata, and hope to expand the yukata and kimono experience to the public.

Ms. Nathalie Ng

Ms Nathalie Ng is an ex-JET participant (Japan Exchange and Teaching programme) who had resided in Shizuoka. She first started wearing yukata in junior college at the age of 17. Since then, she has been collecting yukatas and kimonos and is absolutely unable to resist them when she chances upon a lovely piece to add to her collection. Together with her best friend, Lili, they organise yukata or kimono outings around Singapore. Through this workshop, Nathalie aims to share the simplistic beauty of the yukata from a Singaporean's point of view and increase awareness of Japanese culture.
