Yukata Workshop

© 2014 Nathalie Ng

The Japan Creative Centre, Embassy of Japan and JETAA (Japan Exchange and Teaching programme Alumni Association) Singapore are delighted to present a yukata workshop this summer. This yukata workshop will be conducted by Singaporean, Nathalie Ng, using the various experiences and knowledge that she has gathered from living in Japan. This workshop will focus mainly on the yukata trends seen over the recent years in Japan, and will feature a hands-on session on how to wear the yukata on your own, simply and beautifully.

There will also be a short Q&A session at the end for participants to discuss about the workshop.Participants are also welcome to bring their own yukatas for the hands on session if they have them. Due to the limited number of yukatas provided for the hands on session, those interested are encouraged to register early to ensure a place.

EXHIBITION DATE & TIME

DATE: Saturday 2nd August 2014
TIME: 3pm to 5pm
VENUE: Japan Creative Centre 4 Nassim Road, 258372 Singapore
ADMISSION: By RSVP only

The yukata in recent years, has been known to be a symbol of summer along with natsu matsuri (summer festivals), and a symbol of youthful exuberance. Not only that, it has lesser rules in its wearing than its more formal cousin, the kimono. As such, it has been experiencing growing popularity with the younger people. Festivals such as the Hamamatsu Yukata Festival has been created due to the growing interest in yukata. This workshop aims to cover a short history of the yukata, showcase some trends that have been seen over the recent years, and show people how easy it is to wear the yukata, and hope that because of this, many more people would become interested in yukata and kimono.

Ms. Nathalie Ng

Nathalie Ng is an ex-JET (Japan Exchange and Teaching programme) who used to live in Shizuoka. She first started wearing yukatas at 17 in junior college. Since then, she's been collecting yukatas and kimono and is absolutely unable to resist when she chances upon a lovely piece to add to her collection. Together with her best friend, Lili, they organize yukata or kimono outings around Singapore. Through this workshop, Nathalie aims to share the simplistic beauty of the yukata from a Singaporean's point of view and increase awareness of Japanese culture. Nathalie is currently the Vice-President of JETAA (Japan Exchange and Teaching Programme Alumni Association), Singapore Chapter.
