TOMORROW beyond 3.11
Titi Freak - Graffiti Bonding & Woong San - Sing for Tomorrow

On 11th March, 2011, a mega earthquake and tsunami hit the northeastern Japan, leaving nearly 20,000 dead or missing. Many still remain evacuated from their hometowns as a result of the ensuing nuclear power plant accident. Since then Japan has made countless efforts in the way to recovery.

Japan Creative Centre (JCC) together with NHK Enterprises, Inc. will bring to you a series of TV documentaries reporting on the Japanese efforts to better tomorrow.

The screenings of recovery documentary series will take place on the 11th of the month (excluding weekends) so as to symbolize the time that has passed since the disaster.

The first film was shown on 11th July, 2012.

To kick off our first screening of 2013, JCC will present you the fifth in the TOMORROW beyond 3.11 documentary series: Titi Freak - Graffiti Bonding and Woong San - Sing for Tomorrow.

Titi Freak - Graffiti Bonding : (28min / English voice-over / PG)

Brazilian graffiti artist Titi Freak marks his territory in a wide swath stretching from Sao Paulo to New York, London, and Berlin, with a few places in between that call out for his attention. One of those places is the Japanese town of Kaisei in the tsunami-devastated fishing port of Ishinomaki, where his street murals mirror the aspirations of a community struggling to recover.

Woong San - Sing for Tomorrow : (28min / English voice-over / PG)

Korean jazz singer-composer Woong San, a former Buddhist monk-in-training has given numerous concerts in Japan including the Blue Note in Tokyo, reserved for jazz masters. She felt the catastrophe of the March 2011 earthquake on a personal level and wrangled with her emotions to find a way to respond. In Singing for Tomorrow, she explains how media images of the earthquake and tsunami jolted her out of a two-year writing slump to compose a song for survivors. True to character, she travels to a place at the center of the catastrophe to share the song - the small town of Otsuchi in Iwate prefecture. Her destination is Otsuchi High School to meet with the school band.
