Lecture & Demonstration

Japan Creative Centre is proud to present a lecture and demonstration by Japan-based intercultural artist-scholar Mr. T M Hoffman. Mr. T M Hoffman will be performing using Japanese hardware (traditional instruments), such as Shakuhachi and Koto, and Indian software (classical music). Guests will have a chance for interactive participation. This lecture & demonstration aims to promote the understanding and development within and between the respective traditions, and in the broader context of music in Japan.

PROFILE OF MR. T M HOFFMAN

Mr. T M Hoffman is a musician and scholar of USA, Japan & India, who has been trained extensively by renowned masters in classical piano, Japanese shakuhachi (by Living National Treasure Yamaguchi Goro) and Hindustani classical vocal music (Pandit Ganesh Prasad Mishra), and is an honors graduate in music and humanities of four universities in USA, Japan and India.

Since 1993, Mr. T M Hoffman has lectured in ethnomusicology (in Japanese) at Musashino Music Academy and Keio University (Tokyo) while researching relationships between music and language.

A celebrated performer of both Indian and Japanese classical musics and since 1989 Director of Indo-Japanese Music Exchange Association, Hoffman has pioneered the use of Japanese instruments and poetry in Indian classical music, and actively promotes intra-Asian creative and educational exchanges through organizing and carrying out cooperative projects with respected artists and scholars throughout Asia and the world.

During four decades in Asia, Mr. T M Hoffman has performed in concert halls and universities, major music festivals, and on TV and radio throughout India/South Asia, Japan/East Asia, USA, etc.

Mr. T M Hoffman has authored works on music in Japanese, English and Hindi, and translated six books and many publications for government and private institutions, including poetry and song collections, oratorio, and fiction. www.ijmea.com
