Shamisen Lecture and Demonstration by Matsumoto Baisho

Japan Creative Centre (JCC) is pleased to present a one-day-only Shamisen Lecture and Demonstration by Shamisen Master Matsumoto Baisho. Mr. Matsumoto will be giving a live demonstration and touching on the history of the traditional Japanese string instrument. English interpretation will be provided during the event.

PROFILE OF MATSUMOTO BAISHO

Mr. Matsumoto Baisho was born in Nara Prefecture and graduated from Kinki University in Osaka. He established the Japan Folk Song Baisho Association in 1976 and became a renowned master of Akita Shamisen, Tsugaru Shamisen and other styles of folk music. He has performed throughout Japan as well as in countries such as France, Belgium and the United States. He often collaborates with players of various musical instruments to explore new possibilities for traditional Japanese music. He has also performed in Singapore on numerous occasions including the "Soul of Japan" Shamisen Concert held at the Jubilee Hall in March 2010, which was organised by the Japan Creative Centre, Embassy of Japan.
