Japan Creative Centre (JCC), Embassy of Japan in Singapore is proud to present a Japanese Sumi – Black Ink Art Painting Exhibition by Ms Nakatani Suisen. An award-winning Japanese calligrapher, Ms Nakatani was inspired by Kokotsu-bun (甲骨文) – a form of ancient Chinese hieroglyphic characters curved on animal’s bones or tortoise carapaces. In light of this year’s SJ50, enjoy a unique view of the world with black and white colours at JCC.

About the Artist and Exhibition

© Nakatani Suisen

Ms Suisen Nakatani, born 1946 in Kamakura, Kanagawa prefecture, is a Japanese calligrapher and Kokotsu-bun specialist who studied under renowned calligraphers Yamanaka Taisen, Kato Koho, and Tamura Kukoku. She has been devoting herself in conveying her own interpretation of Kokutsu-bun using black Sumi ink and white paper similar to ordinal calligraphy.

Having studied ancient calligraphy, Ms Nakatani’s fluid forms with Sumi ink express a subtle intelligence and energetic resolve that maintain a correspondence with the art’s ancient practice even as they communicate a contemporary energy and vital force, creating a series of artworks that combine calligraphy and contemporary art.

She feels a lot of energy from ancient characters that imply the meaning of life, nature, and people’s feeling in ancient times. Therefore, she is fascinated with ancient characters and practice calligraphy to affirm her life, including both sadness and happiness of her experience.

Ms Nakatani was given several awards in Japan and abroad – Thailand, Austria, Hungary and France. She also held her solo exhibitions in Japan, Thailand and USA.
