Japan Creative Centre together with Department of Architecture, School of Design and Environment, National University of Singapore and the Japan Foundation are very pleased to provide, with the full cooperation of Kumamoto Prefecture, a traveling overseas exhibition of architecture entitled "Kumamoto Artpolis: Architecture through Communication".

The Kumamoto Artpolis program began in 1988 as an innovative attempt to develop new communities throughout Kumamoto Prefecture through the appointment of architect Arata Isozaki as commissioner and the adoption of new architectural concepts. More than fifteen years after its inception, the program is still in place. Although it is more open now to local input under the present commissioner, Toyo Ito, the program is still intended to contribute to the development of new communities in which the projects are to be built might be improved. The program is thus intended to develop proposals for new lifestyles and new images of society. Kumamoto Artpolis has helped to build an architectural culture in Kumamoto Prefecture.

This endeavor has been made possible by the tireless efforts of not only the commissioner, but the participating architects, local governments and private enterprises that have commissioned projects and Kumamoto Prefecture as a whole. The result has been the creation of superbly designed buildings that are representatives of Japanese contemporary architecture.

We sincerely hope this exhibition on Kumamoto Artpolis will serve not only as an introduction to representatives works of Japanese architecture but also as an opportunity for viewers to consider the role architecture has played or ought to play in developing communities and increasing regional vitality.
