The Japan Creative Centre (JCC), Embassy of Japan, and Singapore Arts Club are proud to present an art exhibition by Kirie artist Mr Kubo Shu. Kirie is a traditional art technique, where paper is finely cut with an art knife. With this technique, Mr Kubo Shu brings to life Japanese fruits, flowers and scenery, which he shares with the world through exhibitions held in USA, Russia and Malaysia. In commemoration of SJ50, a series of the artist’s selected works will be on display at The Arts House. There will also be a workshop, where participants are free to learn and try their hand at this beautiful craft.

About the Exhibition and Workshop

Mr Kubo Shu uses washi in his work, a handmade paper from raw plant material, and layers them to create vividly-coloured illustrations of the changing seasons and delicious cuisine of Japan. Heavily involved in the revival of Kirie, the artist also incorporates other materials in his work, such as pastel, acrylic paint, fabric and sand, which constitutes an updating of the elegant art form.

In the workshop, the artist will introduce his craft, and demonstrate skills and techniques used in paper cutting to produce beautiful paper work.
