MANGA: Media, Art, Media Art
Lecture by Dr. Jaqueline Berndt

Japan Creative Centre is proud to present a lecture and demonstration by Dr. Jaqueline Berndt, full-time Professor in Comics/Manga Theory, acting head of Graduate School for Manga Studies, deputy director of International Manga Research Center, Kyoto Seika University, Japan.

Abstract of the Lecture:
In 1997, Japan’s Agency of Cultural Affairs established its “Media Arts Awards.” Encompassing the four categories of manga (comics), animation, entertainment (videoclips, commercials, games) and media art (in the strict sense, as related to the realm of contemporary art), the newly coined term “media arts” (media geijutsu) became statutory in 2001 with the enacting of the Basic Act for the Promotion of Culture and the Arts. However, the Agency’s recent efforts to promote their “Media Arts Awards” in Japan and abroad reveal that manga does not really fit in. Although for different reasons, this discrepancy is being confirmed by dedicated Japanese readers who regard manga, first and foremost, as “media” without the suffix “art.”

This lecture will introduce some of the recent award-winners in the manga section and discuss them as representative examples of how manga is being positioned in present Japan, by the state, the industry, cultural mediators and media users.
