Japan Creative Centre, Embassy of Japan in Singapore is proud to present an exhibition of artworks by two Singaporean artists – Ms. Susie Wong and Ms. Adeleine Daysor who travelled to Japan and etched their impressions of the land of the rising sun. There will also be an artist talk held on Saturday, 18 June 2016 where they will be sharing their adventures and inspirations as artist-travellers.

About the Exhibition

It is early 2.45am and the deep indigo blue sky gradually parts to reveal a faint yellow-orange streak of dawn. The shapes and textures of clouds below and above become more defined as the margin slowly widens. Sunrise is in about an hour and a tori gate on the summit of Mount Fuji beckons to the approaching hikers to experience Goraiko on the highest sacred ground in the land of the rising sun – Japan.

Goraiko, literally translated means the arrival of light. In Japanese, Goraiko refers to the rising sun or more specifically the term expresses the mood and gratitude of watching a significant sunrise on the top of a mountain.

In July 2015, Susie Wong and Adeleine Daysor met in Kofu, Yamanashi Prefecture, Japan and embarked on a pilgrimage up Mount Fuji. Fifteen hours from their start at the 5th station base camp, they found themselves 3776 metres above sea level basking in Goraiko and the earliest sunrise of a new day.

The exhibition is inspired by idea of Goraiko while also broadening the concept to encompass an overview of the artists’ travels in Japan where the experience of nature, especially mountains, etched their impressions of the land of the rising sun.

Journeying Japan: From Apex to Land's End
Adeleine Daysor with Susie Wong in Dialogue

18 June 2016

Japan Creative Centre (JCC)

In this artist talk, both Adeleine and Susie will share their adventures as artist-travellers in Japan. Adeleine will present the projects she produced while in residency at AIRY and Shiro Oni Studio, introducing the landscapes and events that inspired her work, as well as the challenges of making art “on the go” and how to best grapple with an artist residency.

Adeleine will also elaborate on the generosity of the Japanese people and culture she received, which has immensely contributed to her artistic and personal growth. Susie who visited Adeleine in Yamanashi and journeyed with her up Mount Fuji will respond to Adeleine’s insights, adding her own travel experiences of Japan

About the Artists

Adeleine Daysor is an artist invested in the everyday. She is fascinated with the make of myths, the thingness of things, and the effects of the uncanny. Adeleine’s practice investigates the visual palette of her home, Singapore; as well as personal and shared phenomena experienced though natural, man-made, and virtual landscapes. She finds special affinity with paintings, objects, and site-responsive installations.

In 2015, she took part in three artist’s residencies, developing and showcasing several projects including Everyday Myths at Grey Projects, Singapore; Yamayamayama, and Brevity + Gravity at AIRY, Yamanashi, Japan; Elevating Stones for the Kanna Autumn Art Festival, Onishi, Japan; and Moving Mountain at Shiro Oni Studio, Onishi, Japan. Adeleine has exhibited internationally since 2001, in Singapore, Philippines, Japan, Guatemala, USA, and the UK.

Susie Wong began her arts practice in the late 1980s, in painting and arts writing, and later complementing it with teaching, and curatorial projects. Her works comprise figurative paintings, drawings, and installations. She had also developed time-based works in mixed media and video installations. Central to her current works is the inquiry of the photograph as medium that mediates between memory and loss, between documentation and nostalgia.

Her works had been shown in exhibitions such as Trace held at The Substation in 2008, which travelled to Valentine Willie FA Gallery, KL; My Beautiful Indies, and After Image, held respectively at The Esplanade at the end of 2013, and Space Cottonseed, Gillman Barracks, 2014. In May 2016, she was a participant in The Substation’s inaugural exhibition, Each Blade of Grass, Each Shrub, Each Tree.
