
"Architectural Exchange Project 2014"
The Japan Creative Centre, Embassy of Japan is delighted to present ‘Learning from past wisdom to design a better future’ an architectural exhibition funded by the Japan Foundation Asia Centre, and supported by various renowned architectural firms from both Singapore and Japan.
Utilizing detailed panels and 3D model displays, visitors will be able to study the survey results and proposals by the university students focusing on the Singapore Shophouses and the Kyoto Machiya. Photos and videos will also be shown to document and also allow visitors to gain an insight into their exchange and internship experience.

In June this year, 6 NUS architectural students visited Japan for 2 weeks of internship in Tokyo with Mitsubishi Jisho Sekkei, Nikken Sekkei, and NTT Facilities, followed by 2 weeks of survey of the traditional Machiya in Kyoto. In the second phase, 6 postgraduates from Kansai University and Kyoto Institute of Technology visited Singapore in August for internship with DEG Architects, DP Architects and Liu & Wo Architects, followed by the survey of the Singapore Shophouses.
Providing an opportunity to directly study the conservation efforts and how these traditional buildings have conformed to the modern lifestyle and coexisted with contemporary structures were part of the project’s objective. At the same time they will be able gain a deeper understanding on the urban residential model and utilizing this knowledge for future design. Furthermore, with urbanization being an issue with many Asian countries, this comparison between Japan and Singapore will provide a meaningful contemplating opportunity for the next generation.
At the ASEAN-Japan Commemorative Summit Meeting held in Tokyo in December of 2013, the Japanese government announced the “Wa Project: Toward Interactive Asia through Fusion and Harmony” as a new policy of Asian cultural exchange. The Asia Centre was established inside the Japan Foundation on April 1st, 2014, in order to implement that project.
The Asia Centre seeks to foster a neighbourly sense of common understanding and coexistence among people living in Asia through activities based on the four Cs: Communicate, Connect (and Share), Collaborate and Create. As the Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics loom ahead in 2020, the Asia Centre envisions projects in various fields, from arts and design, music, theatre, film, and sports to Japanese language and academic study, to foster intercultural exchange among Asians in various ways
