Presentation by Participants of the LKY School of Public Policy 2012 Japan Study Trip
(Supported by the Japan Foundation and JCCI)
In conjunction with the first anniversary of the 2011 Tohoku Earthquake and on-going Tohoku Photo Exhibition at JCC, 3 students from the NUS LKY School of Public Policy 2012 Japan Study Trip will hold a presentation and interactive discussion session about the recovery of Japan after the earthquake and its problems.
From the 18th to 26th of February, 40 participants from over 20 countries attended the study trip to observe how Japan was affected after the large-scale destruction of infrastructure, homes and livelihoods. From visits to 3 ravaged prefectures in the northeast coast of Japan to the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry in Tokyo, the participants were able to learn how “Traditional Culture” and “Social Capital” served as as drivers for success in local revitalization projects. The participants also gained insights about the weaknesses and strengths of Japan's crisis management and how Inter-Government and Government-Civilian cooperation functioned as a result of the government's public policies in the wake of the disaster.
As the participants were given the excellent opportunity to visit places not easily accessible to foreigners,
they have accumulated a wealth of unique experiences in Japan to share at the event. Don't miss the chance to learn more about the issues in Japanese society and recovery of Japan from the perspective of public policy students!
