Japanese Film Festival 2014 presents 23 films from 26 June to 12 July 2014 at the National Museum of Singapore. Organised by The Japan Foundation, Japan Creative Centre, National Museum of Singapore, Singapore Film Society and Luna Films, this is the 21st edition of the festival in Singapore. Through the years, the selection of films has hinged on one criteria – that these films move audiences as they have moved its programmer.
The spotlight on the retrospective component this year centres on one of the masters of Japanese cinema, Ichikawa Kon, and a refreshing line-up of works by contemporary Japanese filmmakers. The fragility, struggles, decadence and triumphs of humanity all make up the rich tapestry of life. Ichikawa’s films cover a wide spectrum of humanistic moods, from the comic to vastly ironic and the perverse. A great visual stylist and perfectionist, Ichikawa has successfully produced screen adaptations of Japanese literary masterpieces which will be featured in the line-up. All the films in the retrospective will be screened on 35mm, a rarity with today’s digital cinema.
The contemporary component is made up of a selection of sensitive, heartfelt and bold works by upcoming directors like Satoru Hirohara, Tetsuichio Tsuta and Yasuhiro Yoshida. This section presents an opportunity to enjoy the diverse talents of these bright sparks of Japanese cinema of our times. In addition to the free and paid admissions, there will be an additional mystery screening. The title of the film will not be revealed until the actual screening.
Come and let us embark together on this journey of discovery and exploration into the world of Japanese Film! More details about the official Japanese Film Festival 2014 are available on their website.
