Japan Creative Centre

Japan Creative Centre is delighted to present a beautiful new exhibition titled "10 Nights of Dream" by Mr. Dominic Fondé, in which Dominic explores the themes and ideas in the collection of short stories by Japanese author Natsume Sōseki. Works for this exhibition comprise a series called "Shadow Calligraphy" in which quotations from the ten short stories are arranged on glass panels and hung so that they cast sharp shadows against the gallery walls rendering the text readable.

Especially for 10 Nights of Dream, Dominic has collaborated with three people from Japan. Mr Masao Takaoka, a Fellow of The Royal Society for the encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce ( RSA), serves as the Art Director (texts) for this exhibition. Mr. Ryuichi Tateno, Latin alphabet type designer and Ms. Ikumi Honda, Japanese type designer (Kana character) also lend their skills for this exhibition.

The second part of the exhibition features the "Dream Landscape" series in which Dominic explores the surreal imagery and varying atmospheres presented in the stories through a series of ten hand engraved glass panels. For the first of these Dominic has invited Japanese glass artist Ms Yukako Kojima to collaborate with him. Ms Kojima’s medium is stacked glass. For the tenth, Dominic has invited Tokyo based glass blower Ms Yuko Watanabe to collaborate with him.

ABOUT DOMINIC FONDE

Dominic Fonde is a glass blower and writer with work in both public and private collections. His work is influenced by his observations of the everyday world, nature, music, and the physical process of glass making and the other media he uses.

His work frequently integrates artistic forms developed in glass with the written and spoken word. Building on his formal art training and practical experience as a glassblower, the auditory aspects of his work are influenced by a keen interest in music (he plays guitar and mandolin).

Dominic is also a published member of the British Haiku Society, bringing a fresh approach to this form in his writing, which additionally manifests itself in science fiction and fantasy. His empathetic approach to his subjects, combined with an ability to meet technical challenges in his imaginative, multi-media creations, helps explain his growing popularity and the range of exhibitions, commissions and performances to his credit.

"UNDERSTANDING 10 NIGHTS OF DREAM" TALK BY ASSISTANT PROFESSOR DEBORAH SHAMOON

Assistant Professor Deborah Shamoon who teaches Japanese Literature in National University of Singapore, Department in Japanese Studies, will be giving a talk regarding works of Natsume Sōseki as well as the themes surrounding it.

This talk entitled "Understanding Ten Nights of Dream: Sōseki in Context" will put Ten Nights of Dream in context with Sōseki's literary career, from his unhappy years in England, to his experiments with creating a native Japanese literature, to his enshrinement as Japan's greatest modern novelist. Sōseki's writing encompasses the coarse and the sublime, humor and pathos, dense lyricism and lucid prose that is still a model over a century later.

The talk will be followed by a reading of selected quotes from Ten Nights of Dream in English and Japanese by students of the Japanese Language Program in the Centre for Language Studies at NUS.
