Director's Message

Konnichiwa!

It was an honour to host Dr Iskandar Jalil’s solo exhibition at JCC last month, in collaboration with Tembusu Art Gallery. True to the theme of “travel”, the exhibition brought us on a journey across the world, exploring various cities and philosophies. There was also the wonderful opportunity to learn more from the Master Potter himself during the talk session. With his usual humour and insight, Dr Iskandar shared many interesting anecdotes, and it was certainly an eye-opening session.

The JCC Cinema screening of JUJUTSU KAISEN: ZERO at Our Tampines Hub was also very exciting, especially with cosplayers from the Singapore Cosplay Club adding plenty of flair and vibrancy while posing as characters from the anime itself. We also had the pleasure of both H.E. Minister for Social & Family Development Mr Masagos Zulkifli and H.E. Ambassador Jun Yamazaki joining us that day. JCC hopes to keep reaching out and holding events in different community spaces in Singapore.

Our current exhibition in September is all about chado, or the Way of Tea. JCC last held an exhibition related to Japanese tea ceremony over three years ago. We are glad to co-organise another one, this time with Chado Urasenke Tankokai Singapore Association, and Water and Ink Singapore Pte Ltd. We invite everyone to once again step inside and experience another side of Japanese tea ceremony. Let us appreciate the utensils, fabrics, hanging scrolls and even the confectionery that accompany the tea ceremony itself.

Last but not least, I wish to extend my sincere congratulations to Chado Urasenke Tankokai Singapore Association and Mr Tange Paul Noritaka, Chairman of Tange Associates, for receiving the Foreign Minister’s Commendations for 2022. Both have contributed extensively to Japan and Singapore ties, and JCC is proud to have co-organised events with them in order to promote understanding of Japan and Japanese culture.
