The Opening Ceremony of Beauty and Diversity of Japanese Washi Paper ~ Traditional Paper Dolls and Contemporary Washi Products ~ was held on Friday, 31 August 2018 at JCC (Japan Creative Centre). JCC Director Ms Akiko Sugita welcomed the distinguished guests, alongside the two artists, Mrs Masako Soeda and Ms Tan Shu Ying. Mr Muneyoshi Kondo from Mino City, Gifu Prefecture – the birthplace of Mino washi – also introduced more about Mino washi, which is inscribed as an UNESCO intangible cultural heritage.

Showcasing both the tradition and innovation of Washi, the exhibition features a wide range of Japanese Paper Dolls including traditional Japanese folktales such as Momotarō and Kaguyahime, as well as the 12 Chinese Zodiac by Mrs Masako Soeda. Creative accessories such as butterfly hairpins and earrings folded in origami style using yuzen washi by Ms Tan Shu Ying are also on display. Furthermore, in collaboration with Mino City, Gifu Prefecture, innovative products such as tote bag and table lamp shade that are made using washi are also exhibited.
