Dr Mamoru Kanzaki, Professor of Kyoto University, spoke about the dynamically-changing relationship between forest and society, in a science and technology lecture held at JCC (Japan Creative Centre) on Friday, 29 September 2017.

At the beginning of the session, Mr Masaki Sato, Director of Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST) Singapore Office, first introduced about JST, its major operations, achievements, as well as The Japan-ASEAN Science, Technology and Innovation Platform (JASTIP). Following that, Dr Kanzaki, whose research field is Tropical Forest Ecology and Interrelationships between Forest and Society, gave an in-depth presentation of his research findings based on his 30 years of experience in ASEAN.

Dr Kanzaki explained more about deforestation, and several important factors which are a part of the relationship between forest and society such as shifting cultivation, timber logging, carbon and genetic resources, and biodiversity and ecology. Throughout his lecture, he gave examples from the various research sites he has been investigating since 1984, including forests of India, Myanmar, Thailand, Cambodia and Indonesia. He also introduced examples of how other countries are dealing with this global issue, such as Costa Rica.

Lastly, there was a Q&A session after the lecture. At the end, both speakers were able to further mingle and interact with the guests. We hope that everyone enjoyed this intriguing and relevant lecture!
