The send-off session for the “World Tsunami Awareness Day High School Student Summit” was held at JCC (Japan Creative Centre) on 22 October 2025. Ambassador Ishikawa Hiroshi welcomed two groups of Singapore students, one group of four students that represented Singapore in last year’s Summit and another group of three who will represent the country this year in the upcoming Summit that starts on 27th November at Sendai, Miyagi Prefecture.
The purpose of the annual Summit, organised by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan, is for high school students from around the world to get together and learn about the threats of natural disasters including tsunami, and how to prevent or reduce damage from them.
Mr Murakami Kiyoshi, Chief Executive Officer of Rikuzentakata Agency in Iwate Prefecture, gave a sharing online about the devastation caused to the city, and its recovery from, the Great East Japan Earthquake and tsunami, and its ongoing disaster prevention efforts. To support this year’s student group, people with ties to Tohoku living in Singapore, as well as members of the Singapore Red Cross, People's Association, Mercy Relief, and this year's SSEAYP members from Singapore, who chose the theme of "Disaster Prevention and Recovery," joined the event and exchanged opinions with the students.
