A rare and inspiring double masterclass by two of the creative forces behind Renoir - Ms Hayakawa Chie and Mr Urata Hideho - was held as part of our Japanese Film Festival 2025 at JCC on Saturday, 4 October 2025 to a full house audience!
Moderated by JFF Programmer Mr Deepagcharan Chandran, Mr Urata firstly started with an insightful presentation, When Images Come Alive, where he shared his perspective as a cinematographer on the art of bringing stories to life through the lens. Following which, Ms Hayakawa took the stage, reflecting on her journey from script to screen, sharing the inspiration and challenges behind the creation of Renoir — including her experiences leading to Cannes.
The floor was then opened for an engaging Q&A session, where Ms Hayakawa and Mr Urata had a deep conversation with the audience and shared an exclusive and in-depth look of Renoir. Many audiences delved into topics such as the production process, actor selection, collaborations with the Singapore team, as well as the meaning and making of some of the key scenes in the film.
