Japan Creative Centre (JCC), Embassy of Japan in Singapore, had the pleasure to host the opening ceremony of A bird in the garden, a cat in the room, a contemporary art exhibition series showcasing works by Mr Tetsuro Kano and Ms Adeline Kueh, on 27th October 2017. This exhibition revolves around the theme of Mitate, a concept that is deeply rooted in the Japanese context, and literally means looking closely to select something, or metaphorically express something using another, and refers to an aesthetic sense based on association or meaning that arouses from the said concept.

The opening ceremony began with a welcome speech by JCC Director, Ms Akiko Sugita. She expressed her delight to be working with Ms Tomomi Nitta again, who had held an exhibition at JCC last year. She also praised the two artists’ creativity, and hoped that visitors can understand the concept of Mitate through the works, rather than through words alone. This was followed by curator Ms Tomomi Nitta’s welcome remarks, who recalled how she was inspired by the two artists’ individual creations, and desired to see them collaborate together in the space of JCC. With that motivation, the exhibition has come to fruition after two years.

She proceeded to introduce both of the artists to the many distinguished guests from the arts and culture field, and each artist shared their personal comments and thoughts. The speeches were followed by a mingling session with the audience.

This exhibition, which is both inside and outside of JCC, will be running till 18th November, with an Artist Tour on 11th November 2017. So be sure to join us again on that day if you are keen to learn more about the intriguing concept of Mitate!
