A lecture on Science through entertainment with shooting stars on demand was conducted by Dr Lena Okajima to more than 300 staff and students at ITE College Central on Friday, 24th February 2017, co-organised by JCC (Japan Creative Centre), Embassy of Japan in Singapore, ITE College Central and and ALE. Co., LTD. As part of Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan’s effort to promote Japanese brands overseas, Dr Okajima, who is a Doctorate of Science in Astronomy from the University of Tokyo in Japan, came to Singapore to share about her team’s project with the objective to enjoy shooting stars whenever and wherever we want, through the launch of satellite and omitting particles to create artificial shooting stars.

During the lecture, Dr Okajima explained what shooting stars are and its different historical and cultural background around the world, as well as space development and how their project contributes not only for entertainment, but also to the advancement and R&D of space field by the Japanese government and our understanding towards shooting stars. During the Q&A session, many students raised some key questions such as the cost, and how space debris might affect or be created as a result of the project.

The staff and students also had the opportunity to see the sample shooting stars particles, satellite parts, and a simulation screen that illustrates the orbiting of the satellite and shooting stars particles. The lecture at ITE College Central was Dr Okajima’s first stop in Singapore, which was followed by lectures at Science Centre Singapore and (JCC) Japan Creative Centre. She also attended the Space Conference and met with several space and science related personnel in Singapore.
