Konnichiwa!

May has been a very hot month in Singapore, but JCC presented a set of programmes featuring Japan’s three traditional ways of art (三道) that brought calm and relaxation to audiences.

In the first half of the month, JCC featured the Art of Tea. Together with Chado Urasenke Tankokai Singapore Association, JCC presented a never-before-seen exhibition titled ‘Fabrics in Cha-no-yu ~ Japan and Asia ~’. Visitors who attended the talk and tea ceremony were introduced not only to the tea, and etiquette of an Urasenke style tea ceremony, but also to the fabrics, which are often overlooked. It encouraged me to see our visitors excited to learn more about these fabrics, and we hope to bring more exhibitions on the hidden gems of Japanese culture.

The middle of the month featured the Art of Flower Arrangement. Singapore Sogetsu Association also led an innovative workshop that taught participants how to incorporate plastic materials in their ikebana arrangements. This was a truly contemporary approach to a traditional art form and it was amazing to see every participant interpreting the material and their ideas creatively.

To complete the set, JCC also provided a rare glimpse into the Art of Incense with an incense burning ceremony event at the end of May. Guests were able to enjoy fragrances in tranquillity under the guidance of a Grand Master from Japan.

Our activities in the coming month of June will seek to further cool the heat with a variety of events that will cater to a range of audiences. In the beginning of the month, there will be a Japanese Hand Drip Coffee & Wagashi Demonstration. While families can enjoy the latest Doraemon film in June’s edition of JCC Cinema, those interested in Japan and Singapore’s economic relationship can attend our latest offering in the Let’s Talk About Japan series. There will also be a photography exhibition themed around water conservation that will take place at the Royal Plaza on Scotts co-organised by SSEAYP International Singapore and PUB.

As there will be many upcoming events, please do become a Friend of JCC or follow us on our Facebook page and website to keep up with our latest updates! We look forward to seeing you at our events soon!
