JENESYS2016 Exhibition & Talk Event


During the start of the event.
A talk event by Singaporean participants who went for the JENESYS2016 (Japan-East Asia Network of Exchange for Students and Youths 2016) was held at JCC (Japan Creative Centre) on Saturday, 1 July 2017. Under the theme of ‘Economics’, a total of 9 speakers from 4 different organisations came and shared about their journeys, experiences and takeaways from the programme and their stay in Japan.

Ms Junko Minagawa, Third Secretary of Embassy of Japan in Singapore, started by introducing the JENESYS2016 programme, such as its objectives, outline and content. A people-to-people exchange programme between Japan and the Asia-Pacific region, she pointed out that about 3,700 youths including students and professional individuals in the Economic fields took part in the 10-day programme to Japan, which included Singapore. For Japan, a total of about 600 participants were dispatched to various countries in Asia, and Singapore received the students of Yamagata University where they visited JCC too. The first presentation was by a team of 4 speakers from Temasek Polytechnic, who presented their talk entitled ‘Through our eyes – closer to Nihon’. The group was under the 5th batch (Industry-University Collaboration) and visited Tokyo and Tohoku region. In their talk, they introduced about the history and food of Japan, their cultural experience in Japan with Japanese drums, tea ceremonies and traditional garment, their study on the economics, agriculture and tourism of Japan, as well as their homestay experiences and personal reflections during the trip.

Next group was by 3 speakers from SMRT and SBS Transit Ltd, where they shared about their trip to Tokyo, Kansai region and Miyagi prefecture under the 2nd and 8th batch, learning about the transportation system of Japan. The team from SMRT talked about their positive insights and takeaways through lectures, industrial visits and culture experiences. They were able to learn about Japan on topics such as Manufacturing in Japan, Kinki District Transportation Bureau and Sendai Urban Transportation Plan. Key places such as Transport Bureau Japan, Central Japan Railway Company and Sendai International Airport were also visited by the team. Kaizen (改善), a Japanese business philosophy of continuous improvement of work practices to increase efficiency, was identified by SMRT as the main reason behind the efficiency and success which they would like to adopt. 1st speaker from SMRT at the event –sharing the efficient, reliable and safe rail operations supported by strong work ethic and processes in Japan.


Speakers from The People’s Association at the event – sharing about how they have learnt about the elder care services in Kamogawa after visiting Manbou (residential care home for the elderly) and Taiyo (health care facility for the elderly).
The final group was presented by The People’s Association, who went to the programme under the 9th batch (Youth Leaders) visiting Tokyo and Chiba prefecture. They pointed out their key visits to key local businesses in Kamogawa, the Manbou (residential care home for the elderly) and Taiyo (health care facility for the elderly) which gave them a glimpse of how the Japanese are preparing and taking care of the ‘Silver Tsunami’, and also local recycling plant to learn how the Japanese has made recycling their way of life.

Both groups from SMRT, SBS Transit Ltd and The People’s Association also shared about their memorable cultural and homestay experiences, and how they have built a bond with the locals during their programme in Japan. The talk event was ended with a Q&A session where the speakers elaborated further on their experiences in Japan.
