The Japan Creative Centre (JCC), Embassy of Japan, and Ikebana International Singapore Chapter 135 are proud to present SJ50 Flower Exhibition - A Celebration of Friendship through Ikebana. In this exhibition, Ikebana International (I.I.) will be showcasing a total of 14 beautiful flowers arrangements created by the members of the Singapore Chapter. Each of them will be dedicated to the joyous occasion of SJ50, the 50th anniversary of Singapore-Japan diplomatic relations. There will also be a demonstration session led by Datin Ong Kid Ching from Ohara-ryu and Ms Momoko Emmott from Ryusei-ha, which will be inspired by the exhibition theme of SJ50.

I.I. was founded in 1956 with a commitment to increase international understanding through the appreciation of Ikebana - the Japanese art of flower arranging. Headquartered in Tokyo, I.I. has a total of 161 global chapters with approximately 7,600 members in over 50 countries. The Singapore Chapter was founded in 1968, with the consistent motto of ‘Friendship Though Flowers’.

Datin Ong Kid Ching started learning Ikebana in 1979, which led her to study ceramics as well in 1995. Since then, she has become an accomplished holder of the prestigious Komon (Advisory Grade) in the Sogetsu School of Ikebana in Japan. She also holds a Third Master grade in the Ikebana School of Ohara, and is currently the president of I.I. Johor Bahru Chapter 235. What makes her creations unique is that more often than not, she uses the ceramics she makes for her Ikebana arrangements. Datin Ong Kid Ching has been featured in numerous solo and joint exhibitions in countries like Singapore, Malaysia, Japan and Australia. She has also participated in the Ikebana World Convention held in Japan in 2002 and 2012.

Ms Momoko Emmott started learning Ikebana in the Ryusei-ha Headmaster’s class in 1992. She is a qualified Ryusei-ha free style master and received a ‘Best Newcomer’ award in 1997 from Ryusei-ha school, for being among the best newly qualified masters out of all of Japan. Ms Momoko Emmot joined I.I. Singapore Chapter in 2010, and has exhibited and demonstrated at JCC previously as well as conducted a workshop at Temasek Polytechnic. Furthermore, she has demonstrated at I.I. Johor Bahru Chapter and had recently exhibited at Ryusei-ha 130 Years Anniversary Exhibition held in Tokyo in May 2016. She has also received the Ryu-ha award from Ryusei-ha Ikebana School in Japan, which is awarded once in every 10 years to a selected Ryusei-ha teacher.
