Support from Singapore for the Great East Japan Earthquake - Ceremony commemorating the opening of "TARO Support Centre" in tsunami-hit Miyako, Iwate Prefecture (Report)

A ceremony was held on 15 November 2011 in tsunami-hit Miyako, Iwate Prefecture. to commemorate the opening of “TARO Support Centre”, which was built with funds raised by the Singapore Red Cross Society. The Ceremony was attended by Mr Shogo Tsugawa, Parliamentary Secretary of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, Mr Kosei Yamaguchi, Deputy Mayor of Miyako, Mr Laurence Bay, Deputy Chief of Mission, Embassy of the Republic of Singapore in Japan and Mr Lim Theam Poh, Head of International Services, Singapore Red Cross Society.

The 320-sq-meter barrier-free support centre has a characteristic red-and-white exterior wall resembling the Singapore National Flag. Besides being used as a community centre for the aged and people with disabilities, the centre also provides consultation services to those affected by the March 11 earthquake and tsunami. Support centre staff will also visit nearby temporary houses built for those who lost their homes in the disaster.
