ABOUT YAMAGATA & THE EXHIBITION

Yamagata Prefecture is known worldwide as the hometown of the heroine in the popular television drama Oshin. It is characterised by its rich natural environment, notably the elegant peaks that surround it - ranked among the 100 Famous Japanese Mountains - and the pristine Mogami River that flows through its heart. As such, blessed with natural resources, Yamagata has nurtured an artisan culture in which creators spare no effort toward uncompromising craftsmanship: a culture that continues to define Yamagata to this day.

This historic culture is now being put to new purpose: through recent collaboration efforts with designers, and intelligent alterations to suit modern lifestyles, Yamagata's craftsmanship is bringing a new value to traditional handicrafts. In pursuing beauty along with functionality and durability, Yamagata’s superior products of outstanding designs are not merely practical for, as we say in Yamagata as a "fruitful" lifestyle, but they have also earned Japan’s Good Design Award, a.k.a. G Mark, and are increasingly valued across Japan.

Most remarkably, Yamagata is famous for producing Kendama - a traditional Japanese toy made of wood that is very popular in Singapore among the kids and teenagers - that is mostly used and widely trusted by the Japan Kendama Association for professional Kendama qualification examinations and competitions in Japan. They will be showcased at this exhibition as well.

The selected Yamagata goods for this exhibition will be held at JCC from 24 November to 5 December 2015 (Tuesday to Saturday). There will also be a Kendama performance and demonstration by Singaporean players on the last day of the exhibition.

Do not miss the opportunity to experience Yamagata and the goods Yamagata goods selected for this exhibition!
