Photography as Art - Seeking Living Absence
An exhibition by Mayumi Terada

9 - 30 June 2018

Japan Creative Centre (JCC)

Rather than memorial or journalistic photos, Ms Mayumi Terada makes photography the context of the aesthetic. In this thoughtful exhibition, you will find photographs of miniature rooms by the artist, based on the theme of "Absence". The absence of losing a loved one. The absence of loving and not being loved in return. The absence of self because of devotion to another's desire, rather than pursuing one's own desire. Come and visit Japan Creative Centre (JCC) to see this unique exhibition, which depicts Photography as Art. Selected miniature rooms will also be on display.

About the Artist

Ms Mayumi Terada started working in photography in 2001. These are photographs of miniature models of interior spaces which she has assembled. The images are shaped by natural light in black and white, and printed on silver gelatin paper as the series: Doll House, Living Absence and Invisible Boundary. The Green House series was started in 2012 with black and white, and also colour images.

She has had twenty-five solo exhibitions of photography in North America, Europe and Asia, including The Museum of Photography Seoul, Nerima Art Museum Tokyo, and Japan Creative Centre (JCC). These photography works have also been in many group exhibitions by art museums and galleries.

Ms Mayumi Terada received the Overseas Study Programme Grant for Artists from the Japanese Government to stay New York in 2003, the New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowship in the category of Photography in 2006, and the Pola Art Foundation Grant for the solo exhibition at JCC in 2018.
