The commercialisation of space activities began in the US, and new players have since entered the US space sector, which had previously been dominated by government and public institutions. The position of the private sector has been changing from a role as subcontractor to that of an equal player in public-private partnerships.
As this wave began to reach the Asia-Pacific region, countries such as Japan, Singapore, and others have shifted their focus from conducting space activities for the purpose of science and technology development to space development for the purpose of developing socio-economies and for solving issues both on the ground, such as natural disasters, and in space, like space debris in low earth orbit.
