ABOUT THE JAPAN STUDY TRIP |
The visit to Japan is part of the "Managing Diversity in Asia" course, offered by Singapore Management University’s (SMU) School of Social Sciences. This is a course that explores how societies, organisations and teams engage with social differences, such as gender, nationality, disability, etc.
In 2024, the course expanded to Tokyo, Japan, through a partnership with Gakushuin University (GU). Throughout the course, Singapore students worked alongside Japanese students to complete research projects on diversity management. With a focus on gender equality at work, SMU students conducted research and fieldwork in Singapore from August to November 2024, and during the overseas segment of the course in December 2024. While in Tokyo, Japan, students from both SMU and GU universities visited and learnt about diversity management from companies such as Japan Airlines, NTT Data, and Amazon. They consulted with an advocacy group that champions women’s advancement at work, and they also engaged in programmes to learn about Japanese culture. The programme culminated in a research conference at Gakushuin University, where all students delivered their final presentations.
