ABOUT THE EVENT

© Suruga Marketing and Tourism Bureau

Shizuoka City, in Shizuoka Prefecture, is Japan's largest producer of plastic models. It has a whopping 83% share. Because of its abundant forest resources, Shizuoka City has always had a thriving wood industry.

Plastic models can be traced back to the time of wooden models. Jiro Aoshima founded the Aoshima Flight Research Institute in 1924, the first man in Shizuoka City to fly an airplane. The production of wooden model airplanes in 1932 was the first step toward Shizuoka becoming the world's plastic model center. When plastic models began to be imported in the late 1950s, the model vogue moved from wooden to plastic.

The switch from wood to plastic had a substantial influence on the manufacturing process. Human resources, knowledge, and money are now required for work such as mold making and plastic resin handling. During these turbulent times, the current model manufacturers rose to the top through skill, passion, and dedication. This is how Shizuoka can supply popular products to markets worldwide.

This one-day event will highlight both plastic model culture and Shizuoka's appealing tourist destinations.
