Japan Creative Centre (JCC) is delighted to invite Mr Kano Yasukazu, a shinobue (Japanese bamboo flute) player, for a special lecture and demonstration, supported by HIBIKIYA Singapore! Besides explaining its history and varieties, Mr Kano Yasukazu will also perform several popular tunes during the demonstration, and illustrate the instrument's evolution in each era. These will include Japanese folk song 'Sado Okesa', music from 'Princess Mononoke', and many more! Some pieces will feature taiko drums or karaoke-style accompaniment.
The shinobue is the only musical instrument that originated in Japan. It has evolved over time, giving rise to various musical styles. It can now be heard in folk songs, kagura (sacred Shinto music and dance), nagauta, kabuki music and so on.

Kano Yasukazu was born in Tokyo in 1963. He began playing drums at the age of thirteen and started performing live while attending Hitotsubashi University.
He became a member of the taiko performing arts group Kodo in 1987 and participated in more than 1,000 performances in twenty countries worldwide, including Carnegie Hall. In 1997, he left Kodo and began pursuing his career as a solo artist. While living on Sado Island, he explored and expanded the possibilities of playing the shinobue, creating his own method of playing.
He made his major debut using this new method in Yamaha in 2005. He has performed more than 2,000 times in thirty countries around the world. As a music producer, he wrote a theme song for NHK's NIPPON NO WAGEI and music for television, movies, and theater.
He leads shinobue workshops nationwide and around the world, and also produced a YouTube tutorial, "SHINOBUE KANO METHOD." Other accomplishments include performing at Expo Milano 2015, collaborating with world karate champion Usami Rika at Tokyo Dome, and co-starring with many artists such as Minami Kosetsu, Salina Jones, Kawamura Ryuichi, and Ito Kimiko. Additionally, he is a member of the well-regarded music project WA-OTO with Nakanishi Keizo and Miyamoto Takana.
