This sensorial exhibition by artists, Ms Sachiyo Sharma and Ms Sunaina Bhalla, is a conceptual installation inspired by the Japanese concept of MA.

MA is the awareness or experience of transient space that encompasses art, music, and architecture. This thought-provoking homage to MA explores the impermanence of life, evanescence of life forms, emergence of calmness using materials like woven linen paper, cocoons, cotton cord, and surgical pins, through intense yet meditative creative processes.

About the Artists

© Sachiyo Sharma

Born in Japan and having been trained at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels, Ms Sachiyo Sharma has always been interested in what exists between two objects. Is there only an emptiness in between, or is there an invisible vibration, like at a Zen Rock Garden, where things resonate silently.

She is passionate about her work from the inception of the idea, to choosing and making her own materials. She uses hand spun paper combined with silver thread from Japan, to create calm yet intriguing texture on her work. The weaving and spinning process, which is time consuming and requires a high level of concentration, discloses a vibrancy which allows one to stop and contemplate about the relationships around them.

Her work has been exhibited and collected widely in Belgium, France, Spain, Japan and the UK including V&A Museum, London.

© Sunaina Bhalla

Ms Sunaina Bhalla is a contemporary artist of Indian origin, who lives and works in Singapore. Educated in India, she moved to Tokyo in the late 90s and has spent the last two decades in various parts of North and South Asia.

Her work currently revolves around the repetitive and ritualistic nature of gestures and their traces. She explores the transformative effects of the deliberate infliction of pain on the human body during the curative process of alleviating disease and decay. By using industrial materials analogous to the fragile nature of the body, she examines the passage of time and the mark making that documents this process.

Ms Sunaina Bhalla has exhibited in Japan, India, Singapore, Europe and the Middle East. Her works are in the permanent collections of the ESSL Museum, Vienna and Mumbai Airports Authority, India, and in various private collections globally.
