Research and Development of V Shaped Terracotta Tiles for Conservation of Traditional Houses in Singapore

Come listen to those involved in working to conserve heritage buildings in Singapore amidst climate change.
Dr Kinoshita Hikaru, Professor at Kansai University, is conducting research to develop a V-shaped tile that improves thermal performance without altering the texture or shape of traditional terra-cotta roof tiles, together with Kamedani Norio, President of Kamedani Ceramics Ltd., and with the cooperation of roof tile craftsman Kumagae Yuji. Dr Kinoshita will introduce its development process and current status, based on their NUS-Architectural Conservation Laboratory (ArCLab) project, that will serve as a model for cool roofs in Singapore and Southeast Asia.
The NUS-ArCLab is the first model project of Net-Zero conservation to adapt the approximately 7,200 traditional old houses that remain in Singapore. Mr Kelvin Ang, Building Committee member of NUS-ArCLab, will also join a dialogue session with Dr Kinoshita regarding NUS-ArCLab's project.
This event is part of the official celebrations marking the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Singapore and Japan (SJ60).

Dr Kinoshita Hikaru is a Professor at the Department of Architecture, Faculty of Environmental and Urban Engineering, Kansai University. He graduated with a Bachelor of Architecture from the Faculty of Engineering, Kyoto University in 1992, and completed the Master of Urban Engineering and the Doctoral Course of the Graduate School of Engineering, The University of Tokyo.
He was a Senior Research Fellow at the Department of Architecture of National University of Singapore (NUS) in 2021. Currently, he serves as a Board Member of Kadoma City Urban Planning Advisory Board and Takaishi City Urban Planning Advisory Board in Osaka Prefecture, as well as Chairman of the Osaka Prefecture Building Review Board.
He has published numerous academic papers and books on architecture, and participated in multiple conferences throughout his career. He has also been awarded prizes including the GOOD DESIGN AWARD in 2023 for "Roof Tile and Wall Material – White Glaze Roof Tile and Ceramicsʼ Chamotte Wall", which was presented together with Kamedani Ceramics Ltd., Sumaikobo Shu, and Kinoshita Architects and Associates.

Mr Kelvin Ang has over two decades of experience in architecture and conservation in Singapore. He was awarded a public-sector scholarship to first pursue his Graduate Diploma in Architecture, and subsequently a Masters of Science in Sustainable Heritage, both at University College, London.
In his professional role, he has led a multidisciplinary team to deliver several conservation projects including the gazette of over 700 buildings since 2003, and working with communities in heritage districts such as Kg Gelam.
He was the conservation consultant for the demonstration restoration project (2005-2007) at 157 Neil Road (presently the NUS Baba House), and is presently a member of the Building Committee of the NUS-ArCLab. Kelvin is also involved in the broader heritage sector, where he is a member of the Board of Trustees for the Commonwealth Heritage Forum. He also supports the Siong Leng Musical Association (est. 1941) in the transmission and development of the traditional performance art of Nanyin.
