ABOUT THE ARTISTS – MS MAEDA ASAMI

© Maeda Asami

Born in Tokyo in 1988, Ms Maeda Asami studied oil painting at Musashino Art University, where she completed her foundation course in 2006. She later turned to philosophy, earning her degree from the Faculty of Literature, Department of Philosophy at Kokugakuin University in 2011, before completing a Master’s programme at Kyoto University’s Graduate School of Literature in 2013. She began studying ceramics following her postgraduate studies. In 2017, she established her independent practice in Kyoto. Her works with crafts include plant-dyed Japanese paper alongside ceramics.

Ms Maeda's work is characterised by a harmonious blend of traditional Japanese ceramic techniques and botanical motifs. She specialises in white porcelain, employing methods such as "itchin" (イッチン, squeezed patterns) and "uchikomi" (打ち込み, impressed leaf veins) to create delicate, nature-inspired designs. Her pieces often feature floral elements like dahlias and chrysanthemums, rendered in subtle glazes such as ash blue and bronze. The translucency and purity of her porcelain evoke a sense of calm and elegance, making her works both visually appealing and practical for daily use.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS – MS TEO HUEY MIN

© Teo Huey Min

Ms Teo Huey Min studied Fine Arts in Ceramics at Lasalle College of the Arts and later graduated from Tainan University of the Arts Graduate Institute of Plastic Arts (Taiwan) with a Master of Fine Arts in Ceramics. Following which, she did a three-year residency at the Utatsuyama Craft Workshop in Kanazawa, Ishikawa Prefecture, Japan, and attended several shorter residencies and workshops at Shiga Prefecture, Japan, as well as the US, Republic of Korea, Finland and Canada. Ms Teo has won several awards and has been exhibiting internationally. This is also her second time exhibiting at JCC.

Ms Teo's work is the manifestation of doubts concerning her relationship with nature. Through the repetitive, labour-intensive actions of collecting, mold making and casting of botanical elements from her immediate environment, she looks into the psychological aspect of her urge to connect with nature. The result of these activities also holds an archival quality in her artworks. These processes are like an accumulation of "vocabularies" which are later visualised into a "language" as an expression of thoughts in regard to her environment.
