PSA was started by Mr Shinichi Emura in 1995, the year in which fear and anxiety prevailed in Japan due to major incidents such as the Great Hanshin Earthquake and the Tokyo subway sarin gas attack.
As an artist, Mr Emura thought about what he could do to brighten up people's lives when darkness seemed to cast upon Japan. He used pastel in powder form, developed this method of painting and named it Pastel Shine Art.
Anyone can easily draw PSA without using brush or water, and it takes only 10 to 20 minutes to create one piece. The art allows you to express your feelings freely, helping you to feel calm and relaxed.

ABOUT PASTEL SHINE ART IN JAPAN AND SINGAPORE |
After the Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011, some events were organised whereby people who lived in temporary housing and students in nursery schools could enjoy PSA. Besides Mr Emura, many instructors participated as volunteers.
From 2013 to 2016, a total of 24 similar events were organised in disaster-affected areas such as Aomori, Iwate, Miyagi, and Fukushima prefectures in the Tohoku region. Not only children but adults, too, participated with great interest in the method of painting with powdered pastels.
PSA in Singapore was started in 2015 by Ms Keiko Kawaguchi and Ms Lim Wai Cheng, and was introduced to Kampung Senang Charity and Education Foundation. In December 2017, Mr Emura visited Singapore to conduct a master instructor course in response to the request from those who had already been acknowledged as basic instructors in Singapore. As a result, 21 master instructors were born in Singapore.
Since then, volunteer activities and outreach programmes have been conducted in Tan Tock Seng Hospital, Yishun Community Hospital, Unity Secondary School and more.
