WHAT IS OSHI-E AND KIMEKOMI?

Oshi-e, which literally means pressed picture, is a Japanese traditional craft that is said to date back to the Heian period (c. 800–1100 AD). It uses cardboard as a base, with cotton wrapped in cloth and the parts glued together to create three-dimensional patterns and images, such as people, flowers and birds. It gained significant popularity during the Edo period (c. 1600–1800 AD), particularly in modern-day Tokyo and Matsumoto.

Kimekomi, which literally means embedded wood grain work, is another Japanese traditional craft that involves carving patterns on a wooden product and embedding matching kimono fabric with a spatula tool. A technique that is said to have originated in the Genbun period (c. 1730–1740 AD) at the Kamigamo Shrine in Kyoto, it has since evolved into a craft that expresses kimonos and costumes by applying fabric onto the body of a doll made with paulownia wood chips that are hardened with glue.

ABOUT JCS CREATIVE CLUB AND FOUNDER MR RAYMOND CHAN

The JCS Creative Club was founded by Mr Raymond Chan in 2014, following requests from members and public during an event celebrating the Society's 50th anniversary at a mall. Mr Chan learned oshi-e and kimekomi when he was studying in Japan, and later studied Yuzen silk dyeing for kimonos and glass fusing while working there.

At JCS, Mr Chan also teaches other Japanese handicrafts such as tsumami fabric flowers, temari (threads woven ball), chirimen crafts, washi paper boxes, origami, shrink plastic and resin jewellery making. Lately, he flew aboard to acquire the technique of lacquer gold gilding.
