Japan Creative Centre (JCC) and Pilot Pen Singapore are proud to present The Timeless Craftsmanship of Maki-e: Namiki – Past, Present, Future, an exhibition at JCC that showcases the craftsmanship of Maki-e fountain pens. Honouring the enduring artistry and innovation of this unique combination of Japanese traditional lacquerware art and fountain pens, visitors will journey though time by exploring Namiki – a brand of Pilot Pen – and its rich legacy with 30 remarkable collections over the years that will unveil the techniques, tools, and delicate stages of Maki-e shaping generations of masterpieces.
There will also be a rare opportunity to see live Maki-e demonstrations by Namiki Kokkokai Artisan Mr Seiki Chida and fountain pen restoration by Pilot Pen Doctor Mr Kiyoshi Hasegawa for only one day on Saturday, 15 November as part of the exhibition.

Live Maki-e Demonstrations and Fountain Pen Restoration
with Namiki Kokkokai Artisan and Pilot Pen Doctor

For one day only, seize the exclusive and rare opportunity to observe live Maki-e demonstrations by Namiki Kokkokai Artisan Mr Seiki Chida and fountain pen restoration by Pilot Pen Doctor Mr Kiyoshi Hasegawa who flew in specially from Japan to Singapore at JCC. Witness firsthand the masterful craftsmanship, intricate techniques, and specialised tools that define the artistry behind Namiki Maki-e fountain pens.
Visitors can walk-in to observe the Namiki Kokkokai Artisan and Pilot Pen Doctor at work at any of the sessions. Registration is only required if you would like the Pilot Pen Doctor to fine-tune or restore your fountain pen on the spot. Please note that the restoration is only limited to Pilot or Namiki fountain pens only.

Please inform us at least 3 days before the actual date if you are unable to make it. No-show registrants will be noted and be given lower priority for our future events. Registration will start 30 minutes before each slot.

Mr Seiki Chida is known for lending his mastery to some of Namiki’s most celebrated limited-edition creations, including ‘Dancing Beauty’ (2003), ‘Hyoutan Namazu’ (2008), ‘Polar Bear’ (2009), and ‘Coral’ (2021), He is one of 18 distinguished members of Kokkokai, the revered collective of Namiki artisans safeguarding Japan’s lacquer artistry heritage since 1931.
Using traditional Maki-e techniques honed over decades of dedication, Mr Chida breathes life and movement into each Namiki pen, as he transforms them into miniature worlds where art, Japanese culture, and storytelling converge. Each meticulously crafted creation also bears his unique personal monogram or kaō (花押) - “Seiki” to signify his authorship, unwavering dedication to the Maki-e tradition and his vital role in carrying Namiki’s legacy of exquisite craftsmanship forward.

| ABOUT PILOT PEN DOCTOR MR KIYOSHI HASEGAWA |
After joining Pilot Corporation in 1990, Mr Hasegawa Kiyoshi cultivated an impressive breadth of expertise across various roles in different departments, including Development, Ceramics, Metal Processing, and Writing Instrument Manufacturing. Through this experience, he gained hands-on mastery across every stage of pen creation, giving him a profound understanding of the artistry behind Namiki fountain pens.
For more than a decade, Mr Hasegawa has devoted himself to their restoration, ensuring each pen retains its original precision and functionality. As one of Pilot’s dedicated Pen Doctors, He
embraces a simple yet profound repair creed, where he approaches every restoration with the same meticulous care, regardless of a pen’s age, value, or owner. In his experienced hands, he breathes
new life into each pen, carrying forward a legacy handed down through generations, and continuing to inspire the next wave of writers and collectors.
