WHY IS KUMAMOTO CALLED "THE LAND OF WATER"?

© Kumamoto Prefectural Office

In Kumamoto, water is not just a resource – it is a gift from nature. Rain that falls on the vast volcanic plateau of Mount Aso slowly filters through layers of ancient lava and ash, becoming pure, mineral-rich groundwater.

This natural water flows beneath the city and supports everyday life. In fact, Kumamoto is one of the rare cities in the world where people drink fresh groundwater straight from the tap. From this exceptional water, Kumamoto’s rich sake and shochu culture was born.

For centuries, brewers and distillers have relied on this pure groundwater to craft drinks known for their smooth taste and refined character. From crystal-clear springs and serene lakes to agriculture, cuisine, and traditional brewing, water shapes everything in Kumamoto.
