Japan Creative Centre, Embassy of Japan in Singapore, together with The Japan Foundation Asia Center, Kodokan Judo Institute and Tanglin Community Club, welcome you to experience and learn authentic Judo exclusively with two Japanese masters, Mr Chikara Kariya and Mr Shusaku Kiryu from Kodokan – the headquarters and centre of worldwide Judo community – right here in Singapore!

Participants will be taught and demonstrated with rare Kata (forms of techniques) at the dojo by the masters. Mr Muhammad Azfar Ali, High Performance Manager of Singapore Judo Federation, as well as Mr Lee Loo Sen, Head Coach of Tanglin CC Judo Club will also be joining the workshop and demonstration. About the masters

Mr Chikara Kariya
Deputy Manager, International Department, Kodokan Judo Institute
Judo Grade: 6th Dan

Graduated from Jobu University in 1997, Mr Chikara Kariya started out coaching internationally when he was dispatched to teach Judo at Syria by Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). Since then, Mr Kariya has been a member of Japanese Judo Mission to various parts of the world such as Egypt, Italy, Laos and Brazil. More recently, he is engaged as a Judo expert at the International Judo Federation in Hungary.

Besides coaching, Mr Kariya also performed “Nage no Kata” 4 times at Kodokan Kagami-biraki Ceremony, as well as during the All Japan Judo Championship in 2013.

Mr Shusaku Kiryu
Staff, Kodokan Judo Museum, Kodokan Judo Institute
Judo Grade: 5th Dan

A doctorate in Physical Education, Health and Sports Sciences from University of Tsukuba, Mr Shusaku Kiryu was a coach at University of Tsukuba Judo Club from 2005 to 2014. He came 2nd place for performing “Itsutsu no Kata” at 2014 Japan Veterans International Judo Championships, and did “Koshiki no Kata” for 1 time during the Doyukai Contest 2017 at Kodokan.

The workshop and demonstration is intended for participants who are 12 years old and above. Participants will be required to wear their own individual Judo outfit.
